History
Formerly “Bagley’s Corners” and “Circle City,” Bloomfield Hills was primarily a farming community until the early 20th century. Residents from Detroit began to move to the area, which became officially became a city in 1932.

Bloomfield Village Square Shopping Center provides locals with daily needs shopping, including Target and Macy’s. Somerset Collection is an upscale mall anchored by Nordstrom, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue, just minutes from Bloomfield Hills. Parks and Recreation
The oldest historic manor in the Detroit metro area, Cranbrook House & Gardens is located in Bloomfield Hills. It is part of Cranbrook Academy of Art, a renowned graduate school of architecture, art and design. Cranbrook House & Gardens maintains its founders vision through the home’s Arts and Crafts design and accompanying gardens. Johnson Nature Center is a 40-acre site that includes a 4-acre pond, a variety of trees, native plants, wildlife, and Rouge River tributary. The center also has wildlife exhibits, educational programs, log cabins, an outdoor amphitheater, and a butterfly garden. West Bloomfield Woods Nature Preserve has more than 160 acres of rolling hills with forested and wetland areas.
Bloomfield Hills Recreation Center offers a variety of educational programs and events. The Oak Routes network is an emerging network of trails, pathways, and blueways connecting the county’s schools, commercial districts, and town centers. The county parks include Addison Oaks, Catalpa Oaks, Groveland Oaks, Highland Oaks, Independence Oaks, Lyon Oaks, Orion Oaks, Red Oaks, Rose Oaks, Springfield Oaks, and Waterford Oaks. Bloomfield Hills Country Club and the Bloomfield Open Hunt Club are two exclusive clubs in the area. Golfing, hiking, horseback riding, golf, ice-skating, and snowshoeing are some of the recreational opportunities in and around Bloomfield Hills.

It also runs the International Academy, a free, public consortium high school that has been rated by Newsweek as one of the top public high schools in the county. The aforementioned Cranbrook Academy of Art is an award-winning graduate school. The private schools include Cranbrook Schools, the Academy of the Sacred Heart, The Roeper School, and St. Hugo of the Hills Catholic School. In addition, there are nearby private and single-sex schools.
St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and Crittenton Hospital Medical Center support the community. Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART) provides regional bus service. The airports are Oakland County Airport, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, and Coleman A Young International Airport. Routes 24, 1 and Interstate 75 are the city’s major arterials.
