Northville, Michigan boasts a historic, small-town feel despite being located within a 30-minute drive of bustling Ann Arbor and metropolitan Detroit. It offers old-fashioned street lamps, specialty shops and preserved landmarks like theaters and historic villages for residents and visitors to enjoy. Northville real estate includes Queen Anne style homes as well as other Victorian-style homes and buildings. The town's population in 2010 was just under 6,000 people.
The first settlers to the area arrived in the early 1800s and built a school, post office, tailor's shop, tavern, shoe shop, churches and two blacksmith shops. Henry Ford later purchased a factory in Northville that provided valves for Ford, Mercury and Lincoln vehicles. It closed in 1981 and the building is now home to offices and a health club. In 1944, the first harness racing track opened, called Northville Downs. The town was incorporated as a village in 1867 and as a city in 1955.
Shopping and Dining
Shoppers enjoy historic downtown Northville’s tree-lined streets, thoughtfully placed benches, and specialty shops like Chocolates by Renee and wine stores. They can also enjoy the Farmer's Market from May to October, the Art in the Sun art fair in June, the Victorian Festival in September and ice carving in Town Square in the winter.
There are more than 75 boutiques, shops and restaurants in downtown Northville for residents and visitors to enjoy, most within walking distance of much of Northville Michigan real estate, including everything from international cuisine to hamburgers to quaint cafes. Shoppers can spend time at big box stores like Bed, Bath & Beyond and Home Depot, or shop at local boutiques filled with home accessories and clothing.
Parks and Recreation
Northville offers four seasons of outdoor recreation, including hiking, biking and swimming in the spring, summer and fall and ice skating and skiing in the winter months. There are also two indoor facilities, including the Recreation Center at Hillside and the Community Senior Center, which boast a swimming pool, gymnasium, fitness centers and more. Northville offers Friday night concerts in the summer and a Christmas parade in the winter.
There are plenty of places to enjoy sight-seeing, architecture and art, including Mill Race Village, which was created in 1972 by Northville Historical Society to preserve the architectural styles that arose prior to 1900. A lot of Northville Michigan real estate reflects these styles as well. The Art House offers events and activities that bring art to residents, including art classes and workshops, a camera club and gardening groups. Community parks include Ford Field, Fish Hatchery Park, Henningsen Park, Northville Community Park and Millennium Park. The parks offer picnic areas, playgrounds, hiking trails and more.
Living
Northville Michigan real estate includes Victorian-era architecture, a unique historic district featuring homes built before the 1930s, as well as single-family residences and condominiums. In 1996, the city became home to the new Northville District Library.
The cost of living in Northville is several points lower than the national average. More than half of the adult residents have a bachelor's degree or higher, and 65 percent are currently married. Many are employed as engineers, sales reps and top executives. The city boasts a very low crime rate.
Schools, Health, Transportation
There are several private schools in Northville as well as public schools that fall under the Northville School District, including the Meads Mills Middle School, Ridge Wood Elementary School, Main Street School and Hawthorn Center School. The Northville High School serves 9th through 12th grades. Private schools include Our Lady of Victory, St. Paul’s Lutheran School and Northville Christian School. There are also seven colleges and universities within 17 miles of the city center, including University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Eastern Michigan University, Henry Ford Community College and Schoolcraft College.
For acute health care needs, St. Mary Mercy Hospital is about seven miles away, and Botsford Hospital and Henry Ford West Bloomfield are also less than 10 miles away. They all provide acute care and emergency services. Northville also is within 20 minutes of three Amtrak stations and has a charter and tour bus company. Most residents commute less than 30 minutes to work, and many are able to walk or ride their bikes. The community enjoys easy access to Interstates 275 and 96 and Michigan highway 14.
